In September 2014, the La Farge Restoration Fund invited its friends, supporters and dignitaries to witness the official unveiling of the new National Historic Landmark plaque, now affixed to the building at the corner of Pelham and Spring Streets. The plaque represents the fruits of a four-year effort and the writing of a very comprehensive application by Preservation Consultant Ned Connors.
On October 16, 2012, because of its unique John La Farge decorative scheme, Newport Congregational Church received notification of National Historic Landmark status. Bestowed by the federal government, such status is held by about 2500 sites throughout the United States and its territories. In the words of the NPS’s guidelines, National Historic Landmark sites must show “exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States.”
