Concern over energy loss through the Spring Street (west side) windows led to the closing in of the organ loft in 1949, blocking the main source of natural interior illumination for the sanctuary. In fall 2014, contractors removed the plywood inserts both inside around the organ and outside on the west windows. These windows have been temporarily secured for safety. In 2015, Serpentino Glass and other contractors will restore the glass windows which are not La Farge and date to the 1850’s. It is anticipated that the natural light coming into the sanctuary will then be muted and more appropriately recreate the light conditions that La Farge found in 1880. Importantly, this project will further secure the sanctuary building from deterioration.
