On June 5, 2015, the La Farge Restoration Fund enjoyed the annual visit to the church by the summer school attendees of the American Victorian Society. The Society, which is open for membership to anyone interested in the period, holds a seminar every June in Newport. Lasting for several days, aficionados of Victorian Era Architecture not only hear lectures by noted scholars in the field, but they also go on guided tours of many of Newport’s most notable buildings of the era, accompanied by the same experts.
At Newport Congregational, the attendees are greeted by Prof. James Yarnall, of Salve Regina University and one of the leading La Farge scholars active today. (In fact, he compiled the catalog raisonne of La Farge’s work.)
Professor Yarnall is a longtime friend and supporter of the restoration effort here and he has lectured at the church many times. In the accompanying photo you see him talking to the summer school enthusiasts while standing before the altar of the church. Andy Long
